I believe it is a false economy to try and save money on "student grade" paints. The results are often"chalky" looking because in order to extend the volume clay is added. Recommended watercolor pallet below -- 2 or 3 yellows, 4 reds, 3 or 4 blues, 1 or 2 greens and if you want 1 black.With the following pallet you should be able to mix any color that you see. Brushes used in watercolors can be expensive but do not have to be. As the years go you will add to them but for starters I recommend at least 1 "round" in Size 7 to size 9. also a small round in size 5 and in addition you will probably want a brush to make fine lines and there are several options. Some artists like a 1 inch aquarelle. I suggest some simple large natural hair brush for bigger washes.That makes 4 possibly 5 brushes total. Of course you will need paper to paint on and good paper like Arches will make your job easier. I recommend 140 lb cold pressed or rough.
